THE
LOVETONES – Meditations (2005)
The
Lovetones was started by Matthew J Tow in 2000, after he had
traveled the US and UK looking for musical inspiration. He found
his inspiration in groups like The Beatles and Elliot Smith,
and imagined a group with pop and psychedelic rhythms mixed as
one. Although based out of Australia, The Lovetones received
US recognition after touring in 2003. Their music definitely
is reminiscent of an older Beatles sound, but it seems to take
on more of a pop-rock sound at times. The lyrics are light, and
the almost whiney voice of Tow is extremely reminiscent of Tom
Petty, but his voice blends perfectly with the spacey sounds
of the music. The greatest thing about The Lovetones is that
their sound varies, from pop to trippy tunes full of a variety
of instruments such as in the song “Sea Shanty.” This
leaves the listener wondering what sound to expect as each new
track emerges, and the variety in the album makes every song
a joy and surprise.
