THE
LOVETONES - A FAREWELL TO LOVETONES
By Freelance Journalist Eddie Pagan
New York, NY -- Every decade ushers in
the birth of a new style of Rock and Roll that energizes the
Rock industry. Our new millennium just brought us the reinvigorating
sounds of "The
Lovetones." Their music does what Rock and Roll is supposed to do: bring
out the “teenager” in all of us.
The Lovetones are a Rock and Roll
band from Australia influenced by the sounds of The Beatles and David Bowie.
However, they take us beyond that “union
of influences” with a new, youthful, rebelliously-mature twist.
Their new album, “Meditations,” released by Tee Pee Records on
Oct. 18, sounds as if it came out of a time capsule from the sixties, because
the music represents a Rock and Roll “Coming of Age” that mirrors
our current social awakenings.“Meditations is a ‘Meditation on
Life’…deep thought,
like a Coltrane or Davis record, not some ‘jingo-istic’ hippy dribble,” said
Matt Tow, lead vocals/guitars.
The rest of the band is composed of Matt Sigley, bass/vocals, Serge Luca,
guitar and Chris Cobb, drums. “We are a band inside a puzzle, wrapped up in
an enigma,” said Tow.
And New Yorkers gave them rave reviews when The Lovetones kicked off their
US visit in New York on Oct. 27.
“They have a new thing going on,” said Carl Bender, 26, audience
member, “It’s kind of like Nirvana but better.”
Audiences in Galapagos, located in Williamsburg, NY, were mesmerized
by such songs like “Inside a Dream,” “Pictures,” and “Mantra.”
“They’re energizing,” said Katherine Yodeo, 27, audience member.
The Lovetones’ “Indie” music is a new style of transcendental
rock called “Stoner Rock,” because the music inspires provocative
thought.
“It's the kind of layered sound to chill out to, to listen to at home while
smoking a nice joint," said Emily Motherwell, 25, audience member.
The Lovetones’ cool, new sound is partly due to Tow’s 12-string “Rickenbacker” guitar
play and Sigley’s bass that’s reminiscent of The Byrds’ Roger
McGuinn or Chicago’s co-founder Terry Kath.
“It’s excellent,” exclaimed Gail Johnson, 50-something, after
hearing Meditations, “There’s something very familiar about it – That’s
very nice!”
When asked what made The Lovetones’ music unique, Matt Tow referenced
the bands love for music and support from family and friends.
“My friends and family have been supportive from day one. Without their
support I would be nothing,” said Tow, “We are a working band, and
not elitist ‘Indie’ show offs…we want people to be
turned on. The music is everything.”
And people are turned on and Meditations just might be appreciated by all Rock
and Roll lovers.
Their music is new, hard, psychedelic, provocative and The Lovetones wind
down their Tour in New York, Saturday night, at the Mercury lounge on Houston
Street, NY. Tee Pee Records - http://www.teepeerecords.com/
